Meet the fellows: Marian

My name is Marian, and I am from a city called Juiz de Fora, in Brazil. No one has ever heard of it, but it’s a quick two and something hours drive from Rio de Janeiro, to make things a bit easier.

I am currently pursuing my PhD at University of Southern Denmark (SDU), in Odense, Denmark, under the supervision of Jasper Schipperijn and co-supervision of Morten Kjærgaard (DK) and Mai Chin A Paw (NL).

I am a physiotherapist with a specialization in cardiovascular health, and I have worked as a physiotherapist in different practical settings, such as home care, outpatient clinics and inside hospitals and UCIs.

Life brought me back to academia, so I did my Master’s in Public Health at Lund University, in Sweden.

During my PhD, I want to show how visualization tools can influence the way movement behavior data is communicated and understood. My research aims to fill the gap in current movement behaviour visualization research and provide practical guidelines for researchers. I intend on doing this through, among other methods, a literature review exploring the lack of effective visualization tools in the field and the need for better communication methods, as well as a choice experiment and cognitive interviews to engage different target groups, aiming at understanding their preferences and comprehension of movement behavior data. At last, the ultimate goal is to create and release tools that can be used by researchers to improve their data communication. Effective visualizations have changed outcomes in other fields, so I believe my research has the potential to change how movement behavior data is communicated, making it more accessible and understandable to a wider audience. This can lead to better health outcomes, more effective research, and a greater appreciation for the importance of movement behavior in our daily lives. By providing guidelines and tools, I desire to empower researchers to communicate their findings more effectively, which can lead to more informed decisions and policies.

Within LABDA, I work as the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion representative, since it’s a matter very close to my heart.

I am a geek in disguise – maybe not that much in disguise anymore, huge fan of Harry Potter, Marvel and fantasy books.
